Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl – Movie Review | Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl Movie Rating

 Ladies vs Ricky Bahl 200x279

Film: “Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl”
Starring: Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Aditi Sharma
Director: Maneesh Sharma

Please don’t look for another “Band Baaja Baaraat” from the Ranveer Singh-Anushka Sharma-Maneesh Sharma team. And chances are, you will come away from “Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl” with a feeling of having seen a smoothly-sculpted con caper about a suave charlatan who wins over 31….or is it 32?…women and then breaks their heart while running away with their bank balance.
We only see the con man, played with sly suaveness by Ranveer Singh hoodwink four women. The first three episodes where Ricky Bahl (yup, that’s his name but we know it only at the end) cons first a bubbly loud Punjabi business family’s fun-loving girl (played with endearing effervescence by Parineeta Chopra), then a uptight hoity-toity business executive (Dipannita Sharma, accomplished) and then simple widow from lucknow (Aditi Sharma, sweet) are cut beautifully, like a well-tailored roomy band-gala sherwani.
Suresh Sharma’s editing moves through Ranveer character’s various escapades with a direct deftness that leaves no room for loose moments. However, a bagginess creeps into the narration in the second-half when Ranveer meets his match (in more ways than one) in Goa. Here, the chemistry is more laboured than luminous.

Though Goa is captured with pristine picturesqueness, the Ranveer-Anushka relationship in the second-half falters due to a lack of inner conviction. Though the writing is smooth textured and layered, the mellow momentum is forfeited once it’s payback time for the con man.
Anushka Sharma’s predictable bubbly-on-the-prowl act here often seems selfconscious and repetitive. Could we please see this bundle of energy do something else? And really, her introductory song is more a homage to Ram Gopal Varma’s “Rangeela” than a panoramic look-see at Anushaka’s character’s heartland.
The songs and choreography are more erotic diversions.
Ranveer Singh gets his act together with great care for details. Each step of his con game is charted carefully with the right physique, body language clothes and accessories. Yup, this actor works hard on getting it right and succeeds. If the highlight in “Band Baajaa Baraat” was the sequence where Ranveer’s character blurted out his love for Anushka, here too Ranveer gets the love-confession sequence just right.
Here’s an interesting actor who matches his enthusiasm level with a compelling quotient of sensitivity .
Fatally, we never know what motivates Ricky Behl. Why does he do what he does? Is he a benign fan of Shah Rukh Khan over-dosing on the “Baazigar” philosophy of fooling women for money?
If the narrative tends to run through a blind alley quite often it also finds its way into a luminous light often enough to make us feel favourably towards the overall products. The locational details and the character-specifications are done with rare care. The three actresses Parineeti Chopra, Aditi Sharma and Dipannati Sharma playing Ricky’s three scorned women slip effortlessly into their roles.
As for Anushka she is a fearless actress, not afraid to let her emotions overrule her makeup. At the end of the film when she dresses up as Santa Claus to smooch Ranveer Singh in shopping mall, there isn’t that same feeling of breathless exhilaration we felt when Ranveer and Anushka kissed in their previous film together.
As far as con capers go, “Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl” moves at an engaging pace long enough to qualify as a rom-com which looks and feels right.

Stray dog on track causes red flag in FP1

Five minutes into the first practice session, on the opening day of the Indian GP weekend, the red flag was deployed as a stray dog bounded on to the brand new Buddh International Circuit and delayed the first ever practice session at F1′s latest venue.

The black dog caused a five minute delay until it was chased down by officials at the smog-affected venue. In 2008 in Turkey, Bruno Senna struck and killed a dog at speed with his GP2 car, damaging his suspension.

BBC reporter Ted Kravitz predicted: “I fear that this dog on track is something that we will see a lot this weekend. There was a dog on the home straight before the session started and Sebastian Vettel came out to look at it.”

Formula 1 in India at Buddh International Circuit

The Formula 1 world is continuing to adjust to its new surroundings in India.

Bruno Senna revealed to O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper that he is carrying around in his pocket a bottle of disinfectant.

“Each time I greet someone, I use it (on my hands),” said the Brazilian, referring to the risk of food poisoning.

Rubens Barrichello, meanwhile, laughed when he revealed that one of his rivals – believed to be Sebastian Vettel – is carrying around a bottle of whiskey.

“Someone told him to rinse out his mouth after eating anything,” said the Williams driver.

Felipe Massa is remembering his mother’s advice to think positively whenever he sees a cow. “They’re everywhere!” exclaimed the Ferrari star.

The smiling Barrichello added: “I heard a bell outside my hotel room and came out to the terrace — it was an elephant passing by.”

At the new Buddh circuit, the drivers think the layout will be exciting, but there are some off-track dramas.

A recurring one was clearly apparent during Thursday’s official driver press conference when a blackout struck mid-sentence.

“Listen, mate,” an unnamed engineer told the Guardian, “the place is chaos. The electricity doesn’t work, the gas doesn’t work and there are problems with the plumbing.”

Blick correspondent Roger Benoit revealed that a coffee machine exploded on Thursday due to faulty wiring.

Team Lotus driver Karun Chandhok told the Times of India: “These are only small issues and I am sure they will be sorted out soon.”

Brazilian Massa, also referring to the inescapable poverty suffered by residents just outside the circuit, told the Independent: “It reminds me very much of my country 20 or 30 years ago.

“Brazil has grown a lot since then, and so now, I believe, with events such as this, will India.”

RA. ONE – Movie Review

Film: “Ra.One”
Starring: Shahrukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Armaan Verma, Shahana Goswami
Director: Anubhav Sinha
Here’s a movie the Hindi film industry can be proud of. “Ra.One” can be touted as the first Hindi film that blends the elegance of Hollywood with Indian sensibilities.
From the very onset, this classy sci-fi film sets the viewers’ adrenalin soaring. It also educates, entertains and eulogises our culture. And, very predictably, from the very beginning you know that the crux of the film is about how good triumphs over evil.
“Ra.One” dwells into the virtual world of today’s youngsters who are hooked on to technology and video games.
Prateik (Armaan Verma) is one of them. For him the villain is the hero simply because he does not play by the rules. It’s winning, by hook or by crook, that matters to him.
Shekhar Subramanium (Shah Rukh Khan), the clumsy, nerdy game developer father of Prateik, lovingly tries convincing his son with, “Allow me to quote….” and quotes Mahatma Gandhi and such like. The youngster is unimpressed, thereby revealing the generation and cultural gap between the two of them.
Disheartened by the strain in the father-son relationship, Shekhar develops the invincible Random Access One (Ra.One), who can take any form, to please his son. Still not fully convinced with his own creation, as a standby he also develops Good One (G- One), who could exterminate Ra.One if need be.
Excited with his father’s creation, Prateik plays Ra.One with a screen name, Lucifer. He manages to cross level two of the video game, thereby antagonising “Ra.One”. Unknown to Shekhar and his team, Ra.One steps out of the game into their real world to eliminate Lucifer, thereby threatening Prateik’s life.
This concept of the characters sliding from the virtual world into the real world seems to have been inspired from the Hollywood film, “The Purple Rose of Cairo”.
“Ra.One” is an outright Shah Rukh Khan film.
The way Shah Rukh gracefully slips into the roles of Shekhar, Ra.One and G-One, leaving no room for confusion, is remarkable.
He is the superhero of the film. That’s because the script was skillfully and convincingly put together by Anubhav Sinha, Kanika Dhillon, Mushtaq Sheikh and David Benullo. The dialogues by Kanika and Niranjan Iyengar are good in parts.
The little gimmicks by Sanjay Dutt, Priyanka Chopra and Rajnikant add to the lighter moments of the film but take the story nowhere.
Shahana Goswami as the employee at the electronic company and Arjun Rampal as Ra.One look fine for the roles they play but have very little to deliver. Armaan as Pratiek is impressive.
The outfits of Ra.One and G-One designed by Robert Kurtzman and the bright production design are worth a mention.
Vishal-Shekhar’s music and the background score along with the awesome stunts and thrilling chases are electrifying. The film would not have been what it is if it was not for Resul Pookutty’s sound design, Sanjay Sharma’s editing and for the visual and special effects team.
With all the minor blemishes, this movie is still worth seeing at least once.
This high energetic film is loaded with antics, animation and action. With many thrilling sequences mounted with grandeur, it gives you the feel of a live video game. It is probably one of the classiest movies seen in the Hindi film industry and a feather in Anubhav’s hat.

ra-one-shahrukh-khan-kareena-kapoor-reviews

Ra.One is an upcoming 2011 Hindi science fiction superhero film written and directed by Anubhav Sinha, and starring Shahrukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in the lead roles. It also stars Shahana Goswami, Dalip Tahil and Chinese-American actor Tom Wu in supporting roles, along with Rajnikanth, Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra making guest appearances. The film is jointly produced by Eros International and Khan's production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, and was originally scheduled to release on 3 June 2011.

What’s at stake, beside the big money invested in RA.ONE of course, is a dream, a vision, an aspiration to make a film which appeals to kids and kids at heart. In short, attempt a film that appeals to the universal audience. At the same time, it ought to raise the bar for Hindi films. Also at stake is SRK’s once-unchallenged supremacy as the reigning idol of Bollywood and that elusive thing called reputation. When you invest your repute in your dream project and stick your neck out, you expect nothing short of a mega-success.

Movies like KRRISH and ROBOT initiated the trend of superhero films in India, with fantasy making deep inroads into mainstream Hindi cinema. Now RA.ONE raises the bar, takes not a step or two, but a giant leap and adheres to international standards, in terms of execution. But the soul, I wish to add, is very desi. That’s precisely the reason why RA.ONE emerges trumps. RA.ONE is beauty [read good looking film] with brains [read content].

What characterizes a stunning superhero movie? I have narrowed it down to three precise constituents that I deem are absolutely necessary for an alluring superhero flick. The first is that the motion picture must encompass spectacular action and edge-of-the-seat thrills. Secondly, a magnificent superhero movie must also boast of luminous performances from the protagonists, which in turn should make these characters appear credible and relatable. Thirdly and most importantly, superhero films must have a narrative that keeps us yearning for more. All of these are indispensable factors in making a superhero movie that will be both acclaimed and adored by fans. Fortunately, RA.ONE emerges triumphant in all the three departments.

RA.ONE is the most ambitious, most expensive and the most technologically complex Hindi film ever made. It pushes the envelope further. It’s not merely a film, but an experience, an event. It’s a film that will rewrite the textbook of computer graphics in Hindi cinema. At the same time, it is very Indian at heart. The relationship between SRK and the kid is the highpoint of the enterprise. But, at the same time, there are ample clap-trap moments that will send the viewers in frenzy. The chase sequence, when Ra.One finally zeroes on Lucifer, and the subsequent ‘entry’ of the superhero is awe-inspiring. The train sequence in the second hour is exceptional and a cinematic feat. The presence of Rajnikanth in a crucial sequence will be greeted with deafening claps and whistles. And, of course, the climax of the film; it’s simply jaw-dropping.

Besides these factors, the ‘Chammak Chhallo’ number is already a rage and so are the sequences involving visual effects. In a nutshell, it’s an entertainer that works big time. You haven’t experienced something like this ever before, on the Hindi screen!

A father tries hard to fit into his son’s world. While Shekhar [Shah Rukh Khan] tries every trick in the book to woo his son, his son had given up on him. Just when the father-son duo hit a deadlock, Shekhar strikes gold when he designs one hell of a game. Finally, it all starts falling in place. But the happiness is short-lived. All hell breaks loose when the game that was meant to be played with, starts playing them.

We are spoilt by cinema’s ability to create on celluloid anything that can be imagined, therefore we have raconteurs making endeavors to bestow us with movies that you wouldn’t have ever envisioned even in your mind’s eye. You realize this as you watch RA.ONE, which is a visual spectacle from start to end.

Director Anubhav Sinha along with co-writers David Benullo, Kanika Dhillon and Mushtaq Shiekh may be inspired by international flicks as far as the concept is concerned, but they ensure that they serve the right masala to moviegoers in those 2.30 hours. What actually takes you by complete surprise is not just the money spent on visual effects or the stunning chase and action scenes, but the twists and turns in the screenplay that unravel at a feverish pace.

Besides, the moviegoers have certain expectations and notions about superhero flicks and they expect such characters to perform audacious aerobatics to save someone’s life or a nation. But this one’s different. Visually arresting and dramatically just what the doctor ordered, the film boasts of relatable characters, which makes this superhero movie for kids as well as grown-ups. In fact, I’d like to add, RA.ONE is not only skillfully directed, but also visually dynamic and entertains from commencement to conclusion.

The album of the film lives up to the grand expectations. Vishal-Shekhar deliver a striking score with ‘Chammak Chhallo’, ‘Dildaara’ and ‘Raftarein’ being the pick of the lot. The background score, also recorded by them, is equally electrifying. V. Manikandan and Nicola Pecorini’s cinematography is top notch. Same goes for the stunts and chases [Andy Gill and Spiro Razatos]. Dialogue [Kanika Dhillon and Niranjan Iyengar] are hardly ever commonplace. What I found most interesting is that, whether humorous or thoughtful, the channel of communication appears very credible. The Ra.One and G.One suits, designed by Robert Kurtzman, are super.

RA.ONE is a perfect vehicle that does justice to the talent of Shah Rukh Khan. He seems to have found a story and character that work in perfect sync and tandem with manic energy. SRK steers this physically challenging lead role with high-spirited self-belief. He’s endearing as the father and magnificent as the superhero with a heart. Kareena Kapoor is a delight to watch. She effortlessly glides into the character. Besides, she looks ethereal in the ‘Chammak Chhallo’ song and her wit is infectious. Arjun Rampal pulls his act with effortlessness and style. Also, Arjun’s well-designed look is admirable.

I’d like to make a special mention of Armaan Verma, the kid who has a pivotal part to portray. He stands shoulder to shoulder with SRK and Kareena all through the film and delivers a super-confident performance. The film has a number of actors in key roles [Shahana Goswami, Dalip Tahil, Satish Shah, Suresh Menon, Mushtaq Shiekh and Tom Wu] and each of them fit well in their respective parts. Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra add to the glam quotient, while Rajnikanth proves yet again that he’s a scene stealer.

But the man who warrants the actual round of applause is director Anubhav Sinha himself. For bringing out the best of SRK, Kareena and Arjun. For the amazing screenplay. For the speedy yet smooth stream of the narrative. And for the fantastic unfolding of the written material. He merits top admiration for every act of his.

On the whole, RA.ONE is a solid entertainer, no two opinions on that. It’s not merely a great looking film, but also has soul, which is so essential to strike a chord with the avid moviegoer. As for the business prospects, RA.ONE is sure to shatter all previous records and set new ones, in India as well as internationally. The film will be the new yardstick for measuring success. It has Blockbuster written all over it!

Photos of Tata Pixel, Concept Car

The Tata Pixel, with ‘Zero Turn’ drive and an innovative diamond-shaped door system, is a city car concept for Europe from Tata Motors. Based on the Tata Nano, the Pixel – at just over three metres in length – is the most package efficient four-seater in the world, comfortably accommodating four adults, unlike a typical city car which is either a two-seater or can accommodate two adults and two children only.

The Tata Pixel’s ability to maneuver and park in the tightest of spaces is made possible by its Zero Turn toroidal traction-drive Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT). This highly efficient, cost-effective system assists rotation of the outer rear wheel forwards and the inner rear wheel backwards during low-speed manoeuvres, while the front wheels turn at acute angles. The result is a turning circle radius of just 2.6 metres. The glass area on the scissor doors provides excellent visibility even in the most extreme turning manoeuvre.

The Tata Pixel also introduces “My Tata Connect” — the first integrated human-machine interface (HMI) concept from Tata Motors for its new generation programmes. “My Tata Connect” enables seamless integration of the user’s smartphone or tablet with the vehicle’s infotainment system and also allows controlling key functions of the car.
With optimised aerodynamic drag, low rolling-resistance tyres, stop-start technology, and intelligent battery charging, the Tata Pixel returns European combined cycle (NEDC) fuel economy of 3.4 l/100km and CO2 emissions of just 89g/km. In addition to serving as the infotainment display when docked in the instrument panel, the tablet also allows temperature, ventilation and air-conditioning settings to be adjusted through its touch screen, as well as displaying information on the vehicle’s performance. A 1.2 litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, positioned at the rear of the Tata Pixel, gives lively performance. The ‘scissor’ doors rotate upwards from the front to allow all four passengers to effortlessly enter or exit the Tata Pixel, even in the tightest of spaces, while the doors’ large glass area provides excellent visibility.
A forward sweeping roofline, with minimal front and rear overhangs, accentuates the youthful styling, while the window graphic features an interchangeable island that can be used to change the exterior appearance whenever desired. The engine is a low-friction design, featuring variable coolant and oil pump and rapid warm-up technologies.

Bangalore Metro first city transportation to offer free WiFi in India

Covering a distance of seven kilometres, the first metro line was inaugurated in Bengaluru in India today, marking the successful completion of a project that was kicked off in April 2007, The Economic Times reports.

Named “Namma Metro” (literally, “our metro”) in the regional language Kannada, it has the distinction of being the first city transportation system in the country that offers free WiFi access to passengers.

It is fitting that Bengaluru, the IT hub of India, should be the first city in the country to offer such a feature to its residents. Dubbed as the “Silicon Valley of India”, it is a melting pot for tech professionals from all over the country, homegrown technology startups and established titans of the industry and hundreds of multinational corporations.

The Namma Metro offers the city a way out of its burgeoning problem of traffic congestion and excessive air pollution, even though the current seven-mile stretch is not significant enough to solve them fully. The plans call for a rapid expansion of the metro network in the city, with the aim to cover 42.3 kilometres of the city by the year 2014. And it will all be WiFi-enabled, of course.

Free WiFi in prominent locations and public services has been remarkably scarce in India—with the only notable exception being the spectacular T3 Terminal at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. Hopefully, the introduction of free wireless access in more of these state-operated projects will spearhead the rise of more wireless hotspots all around the country.

Dhanteras 24 October 2011

The Festival of Dhan Teras

Have you seen your family following a ritual of buying gold or silver jewellery or simply some utensils two days prior to Diwali? If you have and you thought that it was part of Diwali celebrations, then you are about to discover a new fact. This festival, two days prior to Diwali definitely adds to the excitement and zeal of Diwali but it is actually the festival of Dhanteras.

Dhan refers to money in Sanskrit and Teras is a reference to the time of year when the festival falls that is the 13th day of the month of Ashwin as per the Hindu calendar. There are certain legends associated with the festival which make a reference to significance of Dhanteras as the festival of wealth and money. Hence, buying precious metals which are a form of Dhan (Money) is considered an auspicious exercise.

Legends of Dhanteras

In India every festival comes steeped in legends which add to the charm and mysticism of the festival. Lending an ear to these tales many a times leave people awe-struck.

The legend of Dhanteras bears a relation to the son of one ancient king Hima. After being acquainted with the fact that her husband is doomed to die on the 4th day of their marriage, the daughter- in -law of king Hima decided to save her husband. She collected all the precious ornaments and left them in a heap at the entrance of their bedroom and lighted the entire place with lamps. Then, she kept her husband occupied by singing him melodious songs and preventing him from sleeping, fearing he might sleep forever. When Yama (the God of death) came in the form of a serpent he was blinded with lights and he kept sitting at the heap of ornaments (serpents have special attraction to precious ornaments) listening to melodious songs of the wife. In the morning he went away quietly leaving the husband unharmed.

Another important legend associated with the festival is that Indra due to his rising glory became proud that is why Lakshmi (goddess of prosperity) left him. He was soon attacked by demons and was utterly defeated on every side. According to the plan of Indra’s teacher Brihaspati, the sea of milk was churned by both devtas (Gods) and demons for amrit (holy nector). Goddess Lakshmi appeared out of the sea carrying a lotus and pardoned Indra. Then finally Dhanvantari emerged out of the sea and carrying the holy nectar which Vishnu managed to give to the Devtas. Since then, the festival is celebrated to mark the emergence of Lakshmi.

Dhanteras Celebrations in India

Dhanteras is mostly celebrated in the North-India. The festival like most of Indian festivals is marked with a traditional puja. Making interesting Rangoli patterns is another major attraction of the festival. In some of the households rice flour and vermilion powder are used to draw small footprints which apparently signify arrival of Goddess Lakshmi. These traditional ways of celebrating the festival have changed and evolved over the time. If we may bother to notice, each and every legend or ritual of this festival has its base in importance of wealth. Indra being proud of his wealth, churning of ocean to obtain precious nector, Hima’s daughter in law using precious ornaments to save her husband. If we may try and take a lesson from each of these legends, we will soon learn that both material and spiritual wealth is of importance to us. The festival is not about following the customs associated with it blindly, it is about learning a new lesson and way to live a better life.

Hence, Dhanteras should be a festival when we should introspect our inner selves and find out if we are as eager to increase our spiritual wealth as we are to double our material wealth. Then only can we celebrate the festival in its true essence.
